Ownership of property – the means of production – is the basic foundation of class structure. Property is only one form of “Social Closure” which can be and is monopolized by a minority and is used as a basis of power over others whom have less access to this system of wealth. Therefore, social closure can clearly be defined as a process whereby one group has exclusive control over resources, limiting access to them as well as being able to have complete control over each and every one of its subjects through coercive methods, through subliminal applications especially the media and other sources that can convey whatever message that the minority wish to pass down to the en-mass.
Two types of process are involved in social closure. “Exclusion” refers to strategies that groups adopt to separate outsiders from themselves, preventing them from having access to valued resources. Thus white unions in the US have in the past have excluded blacks from to membership, as a means of maintaining their own privileges. “Usurpation” refers to the attempts of the less privileged to acquire resources previously monopolized by others – as where blacks struggle to achieve rights of union membership
It must be also noted that language, culture, and religion all play a major part in the application of all the above.
